Oral Sedation Instructions, Triazolam (Halcion)

Please read these instructions carefully before your appointment. Following them ensures your safety and comfort during treatment.

Please read all instructions before taking your medication

Oral sedation requires careful preparation. Follow every guideline below to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.

Pre-Appointment Preparation

Before your visit

Medication & Arrival

  • Take your prescribed Triazolam (Halcion) exactly 1.5 hours before your appointment
  • Arrive at the office at least 1 hour before your scheduled time
  • Bring any extra tablets with you
  • Feel free to bring a book or music playlist to help you relax

Fasting Rules

  • Do not eat or drink anything starting 3 hours before your appointment
  • Avoid all caffeine (coffee, tea, soda) for 6 hours before and after taking your medication
  • Do not consume grapefruit or grapefruit juice around the time of taking Triazolam

What to Wear & Health Updates

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing so we can easily place a blood pressure cuff
  • Keep at least two fingers free of fake nails or colored nail polish for the pulse oximeter
  • Inform the office immediately of any recent changes to your health or daily medications
Driver & Companion

Responsibilities

Important: Your driver/companion must read these rules before you take your medication

  • Continuous Supervision: A responsible adult must stay with you from the exact moment you take the medication until you are completely recovered.
  • Physical Assistance: Your companion should hold your arm when you walk and ensure you do not use stairs alone to prevent falls.
  • Post-Appt Care: Expect to feel sleepy or sluggish for the rest of the day. Even if you seem alert, do not be left alone.
Post-Appointment

Restrictions

Follow these guidelines after your appointment to ensure safe recovery.

No Driving or Machinery

Do not drive or operate any dangerous equipment for at least 12 hours after your appointment, or until the medication completely wears off.

No Important Decisions

The sedative impairs your judgment. Postpone making any critical choices until you are fully recovered.

No Alcohol or Drugs

Absolutely do not consume alcohol or recreational drugs. Mixing them with your sedative can cause life-threatening complications.

Daily Medications

Keep taking your usual prescription drugs unless Dr. Sandhu or your primary physician specifically told you otherwise.
