Clinical & Procedure FAQs

A consultation is an opportunity to discuss your specific dental needs with an expert in the field. When your dentist refers you to an endodontist, it is not a reason for alarm, rather, it is a sign that they are prioritizing your dental health and ensuring you receive the highest level of care. General dentists are qualified to perform many procedures, but certain cases, such as molars with complex, narrow, or curved canals, require the specialized training and advanced technology that endodontists use, such as surgical microscopes and 3D imaging. You may also be referred for a diagnosis of difficult dental pain, management of traumatic injuries, or when a previous treatment has failed. Ultimately, the referral is made to ensure the best chance of saving your natural tooth.

Modern root canal therapy is generally no more uncomfortable than having a routine filling. We use highly effective local anesthesia to ensure the area is completely numb. Most patients report feeling little to no discomfort during the procedure, any mild tenderness afterward is typically managed easily with over-the-counter medications.

Yes, you remain awake and aware. We prioritize your comfort and offer options to help you relax, including oral sedation. We do not currently offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or IV sedation.

Most standard treatments are completed in one visit lasting between 60 and 90 minutes. Complex cases may occasionally require a second appointment to ensure the best clinical result.

The primary alternative is tooth extraction. If a tooth is non-restorable, extraction may be recommended, followed by options like dental implants or bridges to restore function and aesthetics. In specific non-symptomatic cases, a "watch and wait" approach may be appropriate.

No. This is a long-debunked myth based on flawed, century-old research. Root canal therapy is a safe, effective procedure performed millions of times annually to eliminate infection and preserve your natural tooth.

Recovery & Post-Op FAQs

It is normal to experience slight sensitivity or tenderness for a few days as the tissue heals. This is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers. You will be provided with specific post-operative instructions to support your recovery. If pain does not improve or worsens after a week, please contact our office.

Most patients return to their normal daily activities immediately or the following day. We advise avoiding chewing on the treated tooth until your final restoration (crown) is placed by your general dentist.
